Kennel Cough
Kennel cough is a fairly common ailment in dogs. People tend to associate it with dogs who either are being or recently have been boarded (or "kenneled"). But your dog need not be boarded to catch kennel cough. Kennel cough is caused by an airborne virus, which is highly contagious. Any time your dog is in the vicinity of an infected dog, the potential exists for infection. Having a strong immune system is best way to avoid coming down with symptoms if/when your dog is exposed to the virus. This is why not every dog in the kennel (or house) will get it if there is an outbreak.

Although there is a vaccine (Bordatella) for Kennel Cough, it is often not effective in preventing infection. The most likely explanation for this is that there are many strains and mutations of the virus out there. Therefore, it is hit or miss whether the vaccine used on your dog will be the right one for the strain with which your dog comes into contact. This is similar to the "flu shot" for people; each year a vaccine is developed based on which strain(s) are suspected to be most prevalent. Be aware that your dog can still catch Kennel Cough even if s/he has had a shot to prevent it.

The usual symptoms of Kennel Cough include a dry, "non-productive" cough. The dog sounds as if there is something stuck or caught in the throat and the coughing is an unsuccessful attempt to dislodge the object. Sometimes the coughing/gagging seems very violent. The episodes of coughing may go on for minutes at a time and then be repeated at intervals. Of course you will want to check your dog and make certain that there is not anything actually stuck in the throat! One way you can "test" for Kennel Cough is to press the throat gently, right in the collar area. If the dog has Kennel Cough, this will probably trigger some coughing.

If your dog does develop Kennel Cough symptoms, do not panic! The way this illness operates is analogous to the common cold that we humans sometimes catch; simply put: it must run its course. There is no magic pill or cure, but there are many ways to treat and ease the symptoms. The goal is to support the body (immune system) while it is healing itself.  Antibiotics are NOT indicated (although they are routinely prescribed and used) because this is a virus, not a bacteria. Antibiotic use is actually thought to slow the healing process. Kennel cough generally will be gone in two weeks time or less, with or without antibiotics (but probably faster without).

                       VACCINATIONS PROTECT YOUR PET
1.VACCINATIONS ARE GIVEN TO PREVENT THE DEVELOPMENT OF SPECIFIC INFECTIOUS DISEASES.

2.VACCINES DO NOT CAUSE A DISEASE, BUT ACT AS A STIMULUS TO YOUR PET'S IMMUNE SYSTEM, CAUSING IT TO PRODUCE ANTIBODIES CAPABLE OF PROTECTING YOUR PET AGAINST THOSE SPECIFIC DISEASES, ANTIBODIES FIGHT DISEASES. ANTIBODIES FIGHT DISEASE BY KILLING DISEASE-CAUSING ORGANISMS WITHIN THE BODY.

3.ANTIBODY LEVELS PRODUCED BY THE INITIAL VACCINATION DIMINISH WITH TIME, WHEN YOUR PET IS REVACCINATED, ITS IMMUNE SYSTEM IS STIMULATED TO " REMEMBER" THE SPECIFIC DISEASE ORGANISM AND MANUFACTURE MORE OF THE APPROPRIATE ANTIBODIES.

4.VACCINES ARE NOT GUARANTEED TO PREVENT DISEASE BECAUSE TOO MANY VARIABLES ARE INVOLVED. THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IS THE IMMUNE SYSTEM OF THE INDIVIDUAL PET. LIKE PEOPLE, PETS HAVE VARYING ABILITIES TO RESPOND TO VACCINES AND FIGHT OFF AN INFECTION. SOME ANIMALS NATURALLY RESPOND BETTER TO VACCINATIONS THAN OTHERS.
VERY YOUNG PUPS, AS WELL AS AGING PETS, APPEAR TO HAVE DIMINISHED ABILITY TO RESPOND TO VACCINATIONS, IN SUCH CASES, IT IS CRITICAL THAT THE PET BE REVACCINATED AT THE APPROPRIATE INTERVAL. AN ANIMAL THAT IS UNDERWEIGHT, PREGNANT, OR STRESSED BECAUSE OF A SERIOUS INFESTATION OF PARASITES OR OTHER ILLNESS ALSO MAY RESPOND POORLY TO VACCINATIONS.
IF AN ANIMAL IS EXPOSED TO DISEASE SHORTLY BEFORE OR AFTER VACCINATION IT MAY NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT TIME TO DEVELOP IMMUNITY FROM THE VACCINATION BEFORE IT BECOMES SICK. THIS OFTEN OCCURS IN PETS ADOPTED FROM SHELTERS WHERE THEY HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO ALL SORTS OF DISEASES. REMEMBER THAT IT TAKES TIME FOR A DISEASE TO DEVELOP AFTER EXPOSURE, AND THE VACCINE MAY NOT HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO ACTIVATE THE PET'S IMMUNE SYSTEM IF THE DISEASE IS ALREADY WORKING IN THE PET'S BODY.

5. NORMAL PUPPIES, WHICH ARE ALLOWED TO NURSE, ABSORB ANTIBODIES FROM THEIR MOTHER'S MILK. THIS ONLY OCCURS DURING THE FIRST 6-12 HOURS OF LIFE AND IS ONLY PRESENT IN THE MOTHER'S "FIRST MILK". THESE ANTIBODIES DEFEND AGAINST DISEASE UNTIL THE YOUNG ANIMAL'S IMMUNE SYSTEM IS ABLE TO DO SO.

6.VACCINATIONS FOR DOGS THAT ARE RECOMMENDED INCLUDE: DISTEMPER, HEPATITIS, LEPTPSPIROSIS, PARAINFLUENZA, PARVO VIRUS, CORONA VIRUS, AND RABIES.
We cannot state enough how important resting will be for your teacup size puppy, too much activity will harm your pup. Do not allow your puppy around other dogs and limit the playing to 10 to 15 minutes then a couple of hours of rest.
As you know you have just purchased one of the smallest of the small. They will need constant, love, care and delicate handling until they weigh about 2.5 lbs. or are older than 6 months of age.

1) Understand that the puppy being purchased is an extremely small. Furthermore, the buyer understand additional care will needed to insure the health and well being of the puppy. With out the proper care this size pup can and will suffer from hypoglycemia, dehydration etc.

2) Make sure the puppy has food and water at all times with easy access.

3) Give Enercal, Nutristat or Nutrical this is a glucose based supplement which is needed for additional calories. Portion should be about a jelly bean size 3 times per day.

4) PLEASE make sure that the puppy gets rest. Do not let him/her play too long for the first three weeks at least. Let them play for 15 minutes maximum and then have them take a nap. Minimize their activity level so their blood sugar level does not drop. Leave them alone so they can eat. If puppy ever looks lethargic, give 1 teaspoon of Karo or pancake syrup. Then call me immediately.

5) Puppies are easily stressed by excessive holding. Buyer should limit holding the puppy to 15 minutes per hour. Never let young children stand and hold your pup, seated on the floor is recommended, a drop of as little as 12" can injure or kill. The dropping of a pup is the number one cause of injury or death to a puppy with pressure trauma such as being stepped on second.

6) Do not get the pup wet or give a bath for at least 14 days after getting the pup home. If the pup has a area that needs cleaning, use a wash cloth, then blow dry with a warm air dryer.

Yourpup.com recommends that the buyer does not depart from this routine until your pup is at least 2.5 lbs. or over 6 months of age.
